Ocean County dominated the third set, winning by a final score of 25-11. The Colts would need to win the fourth set to make it a best-of-five. They were unable to. Ocean County won the set by a final score of 25-19 to win the match.

Women's Soccer Shuts Out Bucks County

The Incredible Story of Audrey Walker

Image
Nine year old Audrey Walker of Campbell, CA is a miracle of God. Walker was born with several medical conditions that caused her to be born without eyes and she had immediate open heart surgery after she was born.  The troubles didn't stop there, however. 10 days after the surgery, Audrey's throat began to close. Breathing became impossible. She once again had to have emergency surgery to remove what her father, Jim Walker, called the "abnormal blocking growth" in her throats that closed it up and prevented her from breathing.  The story begins before she was even born. When Jim and his wife Heather went for the ultrasound, doctors said that Audrey would come out dead or would need emergency life-saving surgery the moment she was born. Doctors also gave her only two years to live if the surgeries she endured didn't go as planned. Jim found a doctor, Dr. Frank Hanley, who could save Audrey's life through a procedure he created called unifocalizat

Keeping It Versatile

During her time at The College, Lena Buccigrossi played three sports - volleyball, softball and basketball. She is no longer at The College, but she is still playing multiple sports. She currently attends Rosemont College in Bryn Mawr, PA.  While attending Rosemont, Buccigrossi continues to play volleyball and softball. As for basketball, the decision to play that as well is up in the air. "I do have the opportunity to play all three but I'm debating about basketball right now! My classes are getting harder and three sports is a big commitment," she said. She is currently studying Psychology and plans to focus on forensics in the future. She also studied Psychology at The College. Even though she is at a new school, Buccigrossi says she misses the Athletics that The College provided to her.  "No doubt that I am completely happy where I am but I miss everything about athletics at [The College]," she said, " I miss the girls on the teams who w

Colts Crushed by Brookdale

The women's soccer team traveled to take on Brookdale Community College on Sept. 10. Brookdale knocked off the Colts in the second round of the NJCAA Women's Soccer Tournament last season. The Colts were looking for revenge. 49 seconds into the game, Brookdale's Heather Arbachesky scored the game's first goal. Amy Beringer was credited for the assist. A minute and a half later, Arbachesky scored another goal with the assist coming from Amanda Karabin.  Arbachesky scored her third goal of the game in the seventh minute. Britney Ramsey recorded the assist. She also recorded the assist for Brookdale's next goal from Karabin. Brookdale led 4-0 after 25 minutes. In the 25th minute, the Colts got on the board with an unassisted goal from Ciara Alston. In the 83rd minute, Arbachesky scored her fourth goal of the game. Brookdale would win by a final score of 5-1. The Colts goalies gave up the five goals, but also recorded six saves.

Volleyball Beaten by Bergen

The Lady Colts volleyball team traveled to take on Bergen Community College on Sept. 1. It was their first match of the season. The Colts would lose, three sets to none. They lost the first set by a final score of 25-21. The second set was closer, but not by much. Bergen won by a final score of 25-22. In the third set, Bergen dominated for a 25-14 win. Amber Rauh led the Colts with 10 kills in the match. Jahmeice Coleman was second on the team with three kills. Only two other players, Mandeep Rai and Stefanie Iglesias, recorded kills with one apiece.  Genesis Mora led the team with 12 assists. The only other player to record an assist, Kyra Grant, recorded three of them. Errors also proved to be costly for the Colts. They committed 14 hit errors and three block errors.

Blue Colts Men's Soccer Comes Back to Beat Bucks in OT

The Blue Colts men's soccer team traveled to take on Bucks County on Sept. 1. The men were still looking for their first win of the season after losing their first game against Bronx. In the second period, the Bucks would score three goals.  The tying goal came off a penalty kick from Derek Czerniak in the 56th minute. Just 10 minutes later, in the 66th minute, Bucks took the lead when Victor Molina scored on a penalty kick. Czerniak scored his second goal of the game and Bucks led 3-1 in the 77th minute. The Colts came back furious in the final 13 minutes. In the 82nd minute, Jorge Sanchez scored to close the gap. In the 87th minute, five minutes after Sanchez's goal, Aidoo scored his second goal of the game to send the game into overtime.  In overtime, the game-winning goal for the Colts came from Idrissa K

Caitlyn Murray Interview: Sticking to Softball

Image
Caitlyn Murray had one busy summer. "This summer I traveled to Disney's ESPN in Florida while placing second in the World Series and I received the "offensive MVP award" for the tournament," Murray said,  "In Delaware, we placed second also, which ended the summer season, which then led to tryout season." By tryout season, she was referring to playing for the NJ Breakers U18 team. While she did play softball on a travel team all summer, that wasn't the best part of all. "The best part had to be traveling to Florida for softball and being able to spend time with my older brother while I was there and spending my birthday with both my family and softball family," Murray said, "at every high school game I played in the past two years, home or away, he was at supporting me from right behind the backstop. He does this thing to get my attention while I'm pitching to give me a sign and most of the time, the pitch works.

The State of SCU and Saki

SCU and Saki began on Feb. 8, 2016. We began with one podcast every day during the week, taking off on weekends. Eventually, it became too much for both of us, so we decided to do one three hour shows per week. Eventually, we decided to go to one 90 minute live show every  Tuesday night .  Due to time constraint with The Football Five, we had to move our show's day. My cohost was not happy with this, so our producer and I tried to make it work. After we had made it work, my cohost decided she was done and shut the show down altogether.  I want to thank my producer, our listeners and even my cohost for the last almost five months of the show. I will continue to work on  insidethearena.org , the Arena Football podcast we have planned at Inside the Arena and the Football Five, as well as my other work. I will not be looking to start another podcast. Yet.

WNBA Preview: Los Angeles Sparks vs Minnesota Lynx

Image
(photo credit: youtube.com) The Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks have recorded the two best records in WNBA History - the Lynx are 12-0 and the Sparks are 11-0. Today, those two teams face one another in a battle of the undefeated.  The Lynx lead the league in in scoring, averaging 78.8 points per game, and free throw shooting, making 84.8 percent of their shots from the line. The Sparks lead the league in field goal percentage at 49.8 percent, three-point shooting with 37.9 percent, as well as assists, points allowed and are second in scoring behind their opponent on Tuesday, the Lynx. Both teams have star players, as well. The Lynx have Maya Moore, who is coming off a triple double against rookie Breanna Stewart and the Seattle Storm. The Sparks have Candace Parker, who is averaging 16.5 points and 7.4 rebounds in the 20th WNBA season. The one thing to watch for is the fact that the Lynx lead the league the scoring and the Sparks have given up the least amount of

A Look Back at Caitlyn Murray's 2016 Softball Season

Image
Caitlin Murray had her best season as a pitcher for the Carteret High School Ramblers softball team. She had to give herself a pat on the back for the way she played. "I am beyond proud of my self for the season that I had," Murray said, "Going into the season, I wanted to do better than I did last year, which meant I had to put more time into practice to be able to fulfill my goal." Last season, Murray allowed 127 runs and only struck out 52 batters. In 2016, she allowed 116 runs, but reached a milestone of 122 strikeouts. She'll never forget the day she recorded her 100th strikeout. "It was a special day because I had most of my family and friends there to watch me," she said, "but the best part was knowing that on my grandma's first day out of the house after surgery, she came to watch this special moment." While there was bright moments in her season, there were also the dark ones. Whenever we are losing a game, I

New York Giants Also a Serious Contender in 2016

Image
(photo credit: bossip.com) The New York Giants are beginning to look like a Super Bowl team once again in 2016. They have three great wide receivers in Odell Beckham Jr, Victor Cruz and rookie receiver Sterling Shepard out of Oklahoma.  They of course still have their Hall of Fame quarterback in Eli Manning and their defense has also grown a great deal. They will Jason Pierre Paul back for the entire season after he missed half of last season after losing a finger in a July 4, 2015 fireworks accident.  They also recently signed DE Olivier Vernon, who recently was with the Miami Dolphins. They also got a huge draft pick with Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple with the 10th overall pick. The offense will sure be a hot one, the defensive line will be one teams will be preparing for and the secondary will be one that will be tops in the league.  The only missing piece to the Giants playoff puzzle is a running back that is consistent, something they have not had since Ahmad Bradshaw.

Takeaways from the NFL Draft

Image
(photo credit: turfshowtimes.com) I'm not much of a draft guy, but I did watch the NFL Draft this year because I was looking to see which big college stars would go to which team. After watching the seven rounds in three days, I have some takeaways from the draft, such as: The Browns did REALLY well in the draft this year: normally, the Browns don't draft such great players. This year, however, was different. It all started when they drafted wide receiver Corey Coleman with the 15th overall pick. Coleman is an excellent receiver and with the right quarterback, he can do well in the NFL. Ricardo Louis is another great receiver that the Browns picked up in the fourth round. The Browns also drafted a great quarterback in Cody Kessler out of USC, With these three running the team, the Browns could make themselves noticed in 2016. The Dolphins' best pick wasn't Tunsil: The Dolphins got what people are calling the "steal of the draft in OT Laremy Tunsil. While th

Can Jimmy Garappolo Keep the Patriots Afloat?

Image
(photo credit: sportingnews.com) Tom Brady has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 NFL season due to his part in the 2014 AFC Championship game scandal known as Deflategate. Brady was accused of using footballs that were deflated by the smallest of margin in the Patriots 45-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Last offseason, Brady had been suspended for the first four games of the 2015 season, but that was upheld and he played all 16 games. Before then, however, it looked as if backup quarterback Jimmy Garappolo was going to take snaps in the 2015 season. Now, it looks as if he will be doing that to kick off the 2016 NFL season. The Patriots first four games are as follows: at Arizona Cardinals vs Miami Dolphins vs Houston Texans vs Buffalo Bills Can Garappolo get this team by without Brady or will they be in a hole after one month? Garappolo played in the 2015 preseason as it stood that Brady would be suspended for the first four games. Duri

Why the Patriots are Destined to Win Super Bowl LI

Image
(photo credit: cnn.com) A season full of injuries. Losing four of their final six games after a 10-0 start. Still just two points away from their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.     In 2016, things are a lot different for the New England Patriots. They will have their entire team back and healthy. Dion Lewis missed half of last season with a torn ACL. Their other running back, Lagarrette Blount, was gone for the season after suffering a hip injury in Houston. Julian Edleman missed seven games with a broken foot. Rob Gronkowski missed a game with a bruised knee. This season, they're all coming back and healthy. This team is pretty much already destined to win Super Bowl LI in Houston on Feb. 5, 2017. Not only are all of these star players coming back healthy, but the Patriots still have arguably the best quarterback-head coach duo in NFL history in Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. They've also signed former Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans wide receive

Middlesex County College Softball Mauls Montgomery

Image
(photo credit: MCC Baseball/Twitter) The Blue Colts softball team played a doubleheader against Montgomery County College on April 2. They had gotten off to a hot start by winning their first two games of the season. They were looking to continue their hot start. In Game 1, the Lady Colts scored 28 points in a dominating win over Montgomery They went on to win the game by a final score of 28-6. The ladies got out to an 8-3 lead after one inning, and added four more runs in the second inning. The third inning was when the Colts broke the game wide open. They scored 13 runs in the inning to open up a 25-6 lead. Brittany Clayton led the Lady Colts with five hits and five runs on five RBIs, including two home runs in the game. Lena Buccigrossi added a home run of her own, as well as three hits and five RBIs. Amanda Redman took the mound for the women and pitched well, allowing six runs on five hits, three walks and six strikeouts. The 28 points scored in the game for the Colts

Miami Marlins 2016 Preview: Is This Team World Series-bound?

Image
(photo credit: miamisportsnlife.wix.com/mslblog) The Miami Marlins were haunted by injuries to a few of their best players in 2015, including pitcher Jose Fernandez, who didn't take the mound until the beginning of July, and Giancarlo Stanton, who hit 27 HRs in 74 games before missing the rest of the season with injury. Had he been healthy all season, he would have been on pace for 59 home runs. Not only will the Marlins have these two players back healthy, but they will also be returning two other superstars in 2B Dee Gordon, who won the NL Golden Glove Award in his first season in Miami after being acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason, and future baseball Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, who is just a few hits away from joining the 3,000 hit club. Justin Bour was another big part of the Marlins team last season. He hit 23 HRs and recorded 73 RBIs. He also recorded 20 doubles in 2015. Speaking of the Dodgers, the Marlins have also hired one of the best manage

The Texans Should Start Brandon Weeden in 2016

Image
(photo credit: houston.cbslocal.com) The Houston Texans re-signed Brandon Weeden to a two-year deal last week, but they also signed former Denver Broncos QB Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 milllion deal last month. Osweiler became a big-name QB after upsetting Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Week 12 of the 2015 NFL season. Or did he? The real hero of that game was Broncos running back CJ Anderson, who scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime. Brock struggled in the team's next game in Pittsburgh and they lost. The Texans definitely overpaid Osweiler. Starting him Week 1 in 2016 would be a bad choice on head coach Bill O' Brien's part. Brandon Weeden is the perfect quarterback for the Texans in 2016. Sure, his time in Dallas didn't go exactly according to plan filling in for the injured Tony Romo, but when he went to Houston, he led the team to two big wins over AFC South rival Tennessee Titans and helped the team win their first ever game in

RGIII Signing Should NOT Affect Browns #2 Pick

Image
(photo credit: sportingnews.com) The Cleveland Browns signed Robert Griffin III, better known as RGIII, on Thursday. He was once a great QB and it was looking like the Washington Redskins had made the right choice with their second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. But since then, the now "bust" has done much of nothing. If the Browns think that they will use RGIII to lead them to the playoffs for the first time since the 2002 season, they are sadly mistaken. If the Browns want to have any shot at competing with the other 15 teams in the AFC, they will draft North Dakota State University QB Carson Wentz with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Any other player drafted by the Browns would be ridiculous. (photo credit: nfldraftdiamonds.com) While it is unlikely that Wentz will succeed in Cleveland, as that is the city where athletes go to have their careers fail, he sure has a better chance succeeding in Cleveland than RGIII will ever have. Of course,

Five Teams That Will Compete for Super Bowl LI

Image
The Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win Super Bowl 50. Now is the time to look forward to the 2016 NFL season and Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX on Feb. 5, 2017. There are five teams right now that are the favorites to reach and even win Super Bowl LI. (photo credit: nytimes.com) Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks have been in contention for the Super Bowl ever since they drafted their quarterback, Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. They were three points away from an NFC Championship game appearance in 2013, followed by two straight Super Bowl appearances - a win in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 and then a loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX in 2015 in which a Wilson pass to the end zone at the one yard line was intercepted in the final minutes. Last season, the Seahawks overcame a 31-point deficit to the Carolina Panthers - well, they almost did. They lost to the Panthers in the NFC Divisional Round by three po

The Other Side of Caitlyn Murray

Image
A few days ago, I interviewed Carteret High School softball pitcher Caitlyn Murray. However, softball isn’t the only sport that she plays. Murray has also played basketball since the sixth grade. “I started playing basketball in sixth grade because my mom and sister used to play, so I thought I would give it a shot,” Murray said, “I didn’t play that much because it was my first year ever playing and since I was youngest on the team. But every year, I went back and played.” Between softball and basketball, Murray spent some days after school practicing until late at night. “I’m in school from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m, basketball from 3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and then softball from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m,” she said, “it’s tough sometimes, but as my coach always tells me, it will benefit me in the long run and all this time will be worth it.” Murray said the one thing that she likes about basketball is that it keeps her physically challenged. The one thing she doesn’t like about basketball is

Interview with Carteret High School Varsity Softball Pitcher Caitlyn Murray

Image
Carteret High School varsity softball pitcher Caitlyn Murray is only a sophomore, but she has been playing softball since she was six years old. She played on the Carteret travel and recreational teams. In her first season of playing for the Ramblers, she went 6-15 as a starter. She is looking to turn that around this coming season. “ Last season was tough and a lesson for me as the youngest player and pitcher on the team,” she said, “Improving my pitching was a big deal for me. I practice all year round in a local gym where I practice my hitting, pitching and fielding. While going to a few college camps to get information on how to become a better player. ” While Murray was 6-15 on the mound, she excelled while at-bat. She was also the leading RBI hitter on the team last season, recording 16 of them. She was also second on the team with three HRs. Despite this, she still prefers one position over the other. “ My favorite position when I was younger was pitching. But as

Super Bowl 50 Preview

Image
Super Bowl 50 is this Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The game will feature the two #1 seeds in each conference, the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. This is the third straight season where the #1 seeds met in the Super Bowl – the Seahawks beat the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII and the Patriots beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX. Both teams have had great defenses all season long, possibly the two best defenses to go up against one another in a Super Bowl game. The Panthers defense have recorded 44 sacks this season, as well as holding opponents to 19.2 points per game, which was 6th in the NFL. Luke Kuechly has been a dominating force on this Panthers defense, bringing three interceptions back for touchdowns this season, including two in the last two games. He will be a big factor in the Super Bowl. This Panthers’ defense is one that resembles the Seattle Seahawks from the 2013-14 season, which wound up beating the same QB that the Panthers will f

The Pro Bowl May Never Be the Same

Image
Once upon a time, the Pro Bowl was a game where the best players from the NFC played against the best players from the AFC. In today’s age, however, that is no longer the case. Today’s Pro Bowl is played when two NFL greats draft players for their perspected team. Former San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jerry Rice, former San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys safety Deion Sanders and former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin are among those that have had their “teams” participated in the Pro Bowl. This new system in the Pro Bowl makes it much less exciting to watch for many reasons. One reason is that it’s no longer an All-Star Game. In the other leagues, MLB, NBA and NHL, the All-Star Game is between the greatest players in each conference. With the NFL, players are now playing with players from the other conference and are also playing against their own teammates. This makes the Pro Bowl much less popular for the fans that
