The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team took on the
Michigan Wolverines in Anne Arbor, MI this afternoon. Rutgers was looking to
end a three-game losing streak.
Michigan failed on a field goal attempt and Rutgers took
over at its own 20. They punted, and Michigan scored on a 32-yard touchdown
pass to Jehu Chesson to put the first point on the board. Rutgers kicked a
field goal to make it a 7-3 game in the first quarter.
Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock ran it into the endzone to
give the Wolverines a 14-3 lead. That was the score at the end of the first
quarter.
After another failed drive by the Knights, Michigan took
over on their own 40 yard line. Rudock found Jabrill Peppers for a touchdown,
which was officially called a rushing touchdown off of a lateral, to extend the
lead to 21-3. It was looking like Rutgers was headed for another blowout in the
first half.
On the ensuing kickoff, however, Janarion Grant took the
ball 98 yards to the other side of the field for a touchdown to bring it to
21-10. He has now had three return touchdowns, the first Big Ten player to do
so since Marcus Thigpen of Indiana did so in 2006.
The Knights went for an onside kick, but failed, and
Michigan took over inside Rutgers territory. Drake Johnson takes a HB toss and
runs it into the endzone from one-yard out to give the Wolverines an 18-point
lead once again.
Rutgers added a field goal to make the score 28-13 with 4:00
left in the first half. Michigan scored again on a 15-yard touchdown from Rudock
to Amara Darboh to make the score 35-13 in favor of the Wolverines.
After coming back from down 25 to Indiana, Rutgers found
themselves down 22 to Michigan in the first half. Would they be able to come
back again, or would they be blown out for the third straight week?
Rutgers quarterback Chris Laviano threw a pass that was
intercepted by Jarrod Wilson. Things did not look good for the Scarlet Knights.
Grant returned a punt to the Michigan 9 with :09 left. Rtgers kicked a field
goal, and they trailed 35-16 at the half.
In the second half, a four-yard rushing touchdown from De’Veon
Smith made the score 43-13 after Rudock converted on a two-point conversion. Rutgers
was clearly looking at a third straight blowout to a Big Ten rival.
Michigan added two field goals in the fourth quarter and Rutgers
lost their third game in a row in the same fashion, a blowout loss to a Big Ten
rival. Michigan won this game by a score of 49-16. They fall to 3-6 and will
need to win out to hope to reach a bowl game this season.
The Knights will head back home after a two-game road trip
where they will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The game is scheduled to kick
off at 3:30 p.m. ET.
