Louisville Comes Back to Beat Kentucky 38-24

Kentucky hosted Louisville in an annual in-state rivalry game known as the Governor's Cup. Kentucky needed to win this game over their rival to become bowl eligible. Louisville was looking for their fifth straight win in the series.

Kentucky scored a touchdown on their first drive when freshman quarterback Drew Barker ran it in himself from two yards out. On Louisville’s first drive, quarterback Kyle Bolin threw an interception to A.J Stamps which was return 35 yards to the 13 yard line. Kentucky only needed three plays to score a touchdown from Stanley Williams. Kentucky’s lead was now 14-0.

Louisville was driving on their next drive, but Josh Forest intercepted a pass that was thrown off balance from Bolin. Forest returned the interception 81 yards for a touchdown to give Kentucky a commanding 21-0 lead.

The Cardinals got on the board on a three-play drive. New quarterback Lamar Jackson ran the ball in from 16-yards out to give Louisville their first points of the game. The score at the end of the first quarter would be 21-7 with Kentucky on top.

A Louisville punt on their first possession went only 19 yards and Kentucky started the drive at the Louisville 25 yard line. The Louisville defense held strong and Kentucky missed a 52-yard field goal. The Wildcats came away with nothing after starting on the Cardinals 25 yard line.

An interception from J.D Harmon ended another Louisville drive later in the second quarter. The Wildcats wasted more than six minutes on the clock and only came away with a field goal. That would be the final play of the first half. They lead 24-7.

In the third quarter, Louisville scored a field goal, followed by a six yard rushing touchdown from Brandon Radcliff. The score was now 24-17, still in favor of Kentucky.

After the Louisville defense forced a punt, they tied the game when Lamar Jackson found James Quick for a 35-yard touchdown. The Cardinals came back from down 24-7 to tie the game at 24 at the end of the third quarter.


Louisville took their first lead of the game with 10:17 left when ran it in from four yards out. The Cardinals scored the last 24 points at that point. Lamar Jackson rushed for another touchdown with four minutes left to seal the comeback for the Cardinals. They won the game by a score of 38-24. Kentucky will not play in a bowl game this season.
